Reviving History: Family Hotel Merges Ancient Ruins with Modern Design

Darejan Shatashvili's Artful Blend of Past and Present in Architecture

In the serene setting of Abastumani, Georgia, a historical site transforms into a contemporary family hotel, courtesy of architect Darejan Shatashvili. This project is a testament to the harmonious integration of 19th-century ruins with 21st-century design, offering guests a unique lodging experience.

Abastumani, a locale steeped in history and natural beauty, serves as the backdrop for the Family Hotel, a design endeavor that breathes new life into the remnants of a bygone era. The hotel stands as a beacon of architectural innovation, where the ruins of a fortress-town, Odzrkhe, are given a second life. Darejan Shatashvili, the visionary behind this project, has meticulously preserved elements of the original structure, infusing them with modern materials and techniques to create a space that is both reflective of its past and ready for the future.

The Family Hotel is a celebration of contrasts, where the old and new coexist in a delicate balance. The preservation of the ruins during reconstruction was a conscious decision to honor the site's historical significance. The addition of stained glass and modern materials creates a dialogue between the eras, offering guests a visual narrative of the site's evolution. The design's uniqueness lies in its ability to tell a story through its walls, inviting visitors to explore the layers of time within its confines.

Technologically, the project is a marvel of modern engineering and design sensibilities. The hotel spans two floors, each measuring 130 square meters, with a footprint that respects the limited land availability. The stained glass windows serve as a canvas for the breathtaking views of the Abastumani forest, while the interior boasts a modern fireplace that anchors the space, providing warmth and a focal point for social interaction.

The design team, led by Shatashvili and supported by rendering consultant Irakli Shubashikeli, has ensured that the hotel functions seamlessly within its environment. The climate of Abastumani, known for its therapeutic qualities, particularly for respiratory ailments, makes the hotel not just a retreat but a sanctuary for wellness. The design interacts with its surroundings, offering terraces and common areas that invite the healing powers of nature indoors.

Completed within the span of a year, from February to December 2019, the Family Hotel project is a testament to the dedication and expertise of its creators. It stands as a symbol of the potential for architectural intervention to serve as a bridge between history and modernity, nature and human habitation. The design's success is further underscored by its recognition with an Iron A' Design Award, a testament to its well-conceived, practical, and innovative approach that meets the highest professional and industrial standards.

The Family Hotel by Darejan Shatashvili is more than just a place to stay; it is an immersive experience that encapsulates the essence of Abastumani. It is a space where every corner tells a story, every window frames a view, and every moment is an opportunity to witness the harmonious coalescence of art, architecture, and nature.
